1. What is CSPE and why is it important?
The Certificate in SPHE (Social, Personal, and Health Education) is a mandatory subject for all students in the Republic of Ireland who are pursuing their Leaving Certificate. It was introduced by the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and is administered by the State Examinations Commission (SEC) and the Department of Education and Skills (DES).
CSPE is designed to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are necessary for their personal, social, and health development. It covers a wide range of topics, including human rights and social justice, active citizenship, and personal and social well-being. Through CSPE, students are encouraged to reflect on their own values and beliefs, and to develop a sense of responsibility and accountability for their own actions and those of others.
CSPE is an important subject for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it helps students to develop the skills and knowledge that are necessary for them to become active and responsible citizens. It also helps them to understand the importance of social justice, human rights, and equality, and to develop a sense of empathy and compassion for others. Additionally, CSPE can help students to develop important life skills, such as problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and collaboration.
2. What does the CSPE course involve?
The CSPE course is divided into three main areas: Social Education, Personal Education, and Health Education.
Social Education covers a wide range of topics, including democracy and governance, human rights and social justice, and the environment and sustainable development. Through this area of study, students are encouraged to think critically about issues such as inequality, discrimination, and global citizenship, and to consider how they can play a role in promoting social justice and equality in their own communities.
Personal Education focuses on helping students to develop the skills and knowledge that are necessary for their personal and social development. This includes topics such as self-awareness, communication, decision-making, and relationship skills. Through Personal Education, students are encouraged to reflect on their own values and beliefs, and to develop a sense of responsibility and accountability for their own actions and those of others.
Health Education is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills that are necessary for their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This includes topics such as healthy eating, physical activity, mental health, and drug and alcohol education. Through Health Education, students are encouraged to take an active role in their own health and well-being, and to develop the skills and knowledge that are necessary for them to make informed and healthy choices.
3. How is CSPE assessed?
CSPE is assessed through a combination of coursework and examination. The coursework component includes a number of class-based activities, such as group projects, debates, and role-playing exercises. These activities are designed to help students develop the skills and knowledge that are necessary for their personal, social, and health development, and to provide them with opportunities to apply what they have learned in real-world contexts.
The examination component of CSPE is comprised of a written examination, which takes place at the end of the Leaving Certificate cycle. The examination is divided into two parts: a short-answer section and an essay section. In the short-answer section, students are required to answer a number of multiple-choice and short-answer questions, which are designed to test their knowledge and understanding of the core
